In August, during his visit to India, Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka engaged in extensive and future-oriented discussions with PM Narendra Modi, covering a wide range of bilateral issues and regional as well as global topics of common interest.
The leaders expressed their satisfaction with the evolution of their relationship and reaffirmed their commitment to establishing a comprehensive, inclusive, and forward-thinking partnership across various sectors such as defence, health, agriculture, agro-processing, trade, investment, small and medium enterprise development, cooperatives, culture, sports, education, and skill enhancement.
PM Modi also welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the Recognition of Indian Pharmacopoeia in May 2025, which aims to enhance collaboration in the pharmaceutical domain and ensure better access to quality, affordable healthcare products and services in Fiji.
He reiterated India’s support for setting up Jan Aushadhi Kendras (People’s Pharmacies) in Fiji to offer low-cost generic medicines.
"In our extensive discussions today, we made numerous significant decisions. We believe that only a healthy nation can thrive. Therefore, we resolved to establish a 100-bed super specialty hospital in Suva. Dialysis units and sea ambulances will also be provided. Moreover, Jan Aushadhi Kendras will be launched to ensure that affordable, high-quality medications reach every household. We want to ensure that no one is hindered in their pursuit of dreams, hence, a 'Jaipur Foot' camp will also be organized in Fiji," stated PM Modi.
Both leaders welcomed the convening of the 3rd Joint Working Group on Health between India and Fiji on August 13, during which cooperation under India’s flagship telemedicine initiative, e-Sanjeevani, was discussed to enhance remote healthcare services and improve digital health connectivity between the two nations.
