Vijayapura, Oct 4 (NationPress) The Karnataka BJP has called upon the Congress-led state administration to swiftly initiate a survey on crop damage and offer compensation to farmers who have suffered losses.
Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, R. Ashoka, made these remarks following a visit to areas in Vijayapura district that have been impacted by flooding, which has severely affected chickpea and sugarcane crops. He emphasized the urgent need for the state government to conduct a crop damage assessment and ensure financial relief to distressed farmers.
Ashoka was accompanied by a delegation that included Legislative Council Opposition Chief Whip N. Ravikumar, former BJP National General Secretary and Legislative Council member C.T. Ravi, as well as BJP MPs Ramesh Jigajinagi and P.C. Gaddigoudar. They toured the flood-hit regions along the Bhima and Doni rivers to evaluate the situation and listen to farmers’ concerns.
The delegation expressed deep concern for the extensive damage inflicted on chickpea, sunflower, and sugarcane crops. They also assessed the destruction of homes caused by the rains and visited waterlogged residences to hear directly from affected families.
In their visit to several villages, including Anjutgi, Agarkhed, Miragi, and Devanagav, Ashoka was visibly taken aback by the scale of destruction to crops due to the relentless rainfall and flooding, which has submerged vast tracts of farmland.
Farmers shared their hardships, stating, "We anticipated good yields this season due to the initial rains. However, the subsequent floods have plunged us back into distress. We hope that our voices will reach the government and that we will receive the help we desperately need."
In reply, R. Ashoka assured the farmers, stating, "This government is negligent. They fail to show concern even in times of crisis. As the opposition, we will advocate for you and press the government to take action. You are not alone in this fight."
During their visit, numerous farmers presented written accounts of their losses and requests to the opposition leaders.
