What Steps is Congress Taking to Support MGNREGA?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 18 (NationPress) The Congress party conducted a detailed online review meeting on Sunday with Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) presidents, general secretaries, in-charges, and members of the MGNREGA Coordination Committee to evaluate the status of the ongoing MGNREGA Bachao Sangram throughout the nation.
In a bid to further strengthen this initiative, the Congress declared that the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, will participate in a MGNREGA Chaupal in Rae Bareli on January 20.
“To fortify this movement, on January 20, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi will join a MGNREGA Chaupal in Rae Bareli to reaffirm our dedication to the rights and dignity of rural workers,” stated Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, who presided over the meeting, via X.
The review underscored the growing reach and success of the movement in various states. Venugopal highlighted that the campaign has been revitalizing rural workers and panchayats, serving as a formidable opposition to what the party refers to as the “anti-people VB-G RAM G Act.”
During the meeting, leaders committed to enhancing outreach at the panchayat level, engaging directly with the public, MGNREGA workers, and other stakeholders.
The strategy encompasses a series of peaceful sit-ins at the ward level, followed by protests at the Vidhan Sabha and Lok Bhavan, as well as zonal rallies.
Venugopal emphasized that these efforts will be conducted in a well-planned and sustained manner to maximize participation and impact.
This event is anticipated to reaffirm the party’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of rural workers, while amplifying the voices of those relying on the scheme for their livelihood.
Venugopal described the MGNREGA Bachao Sangram as a “symbol of resistance” and reiterated that the Congress will persist in its fight until the scheme is reinstated in its original form.
“Our determination is unwavering, our movement is expanding, and our resistance will continue with renewed vigor,” he asserted.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which guarantees at least 100 days of wage employment to rural households, has historically been viewed as a crucial lifeline for millions.
The Congress argues that recent policy alterations have compromised its spirit and effectiveness, prompting this nationwide campaign.
With the forthcoming Chaupal in Rae Bareli and a series of planned demonstrations, the Congress aims to rally grassroots support and press the government to preserve the scheme in its true essence.
