Raichur (Karnataka), Sep 4 (NationPress) Former BJP national general secretary and Karnataka MLC C.T. Ravi has ignited a new controversy by asserting that Booker Prize recipient Banu Mushtaq would have faced being “stoned to death” had she made similar comments regarding Islam, as she supposedly did concerning goddess Bhuvaneshwari and Kannada cultural symbols.

The uproar began after the Congress-led Karnataka government announced Mushtaq's name for inaugurating this year’s historic Dusshera celebrations. The BJP raised objections, referencing a video where Mushtaq allegedly questions the connection between the Kannada language and goddess Bhuvaneshwari while also criticizing the red-and-yellow Kannada flag, which symbolizes haldi and sindoor.

The saffron party has called for the government to retract Mushtaq’s selection, alleging that the name of writer Deepa Bhasti, a Hindu translator of Mushtaq’s work and also a Booker awardee, was intentionally excluded.

During a press briefing in Raichur, Ravi remarked that Mushtaq’s views were “against the culture of this land.”

“Her comments regarding goddess Bhuvaneshwari -- can we cover her in a burqa? We apply sindoor, perform aarti, and present flowers. Can she be draped in a burqa? These statements do not align with our culture,” he stated.

Furthering his criticism, he asserted: “If we were to express anything similar about Islam, the Quran, or Prophet Mohammad, would it be accepted? If Banu Mushtaq had spoken about Islam in the manner she did about goddess Bhuvaneshwari, she would have been stoned to death. We are not advocating for that -- we merely request that she apologize for offending the sentiments of the majority community.”

Ravi also criticized Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for supporting Mushtaq’s selection.

“By failing to demand an apology, the Chief Minister is indirectly endorsing her statements. If he values this land and its language, he should have denounced her remarks. Instead, he is engaging in vote-bank politics,” Ravi claimed.
