Thiruvananthapuram, May 30 (NationPress) In an unexpected turn of events, the CPI-M declared on Friday that former MLA and youth leader M. Swaraj will be their representative for the Nilambur Assembly by-election set for June 19.
This bypoll became necessary after the resignation of P.V. Anvar, a two-time MLA and Left-supported independent, in January, which shocked many following his fallout with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The Congress has put forth Aryadan Shoukath, son of the late senior leader and eight-time MLA Aryadan Mohammed.
In a media briefing, CPI-M state secretary M.V. Govindan emphasized the significance of this by-election, stating, “This is a serious political contest, and we are confident of victory.”
Govindan highlighted that Swaraj, hailing from Malappuram district, which encompasses Nilambur, is a member of the CPI-M’s state secretariat and has garnered considerable support in the area.
“This election is politically crucial as the constituency has a notable working-class demographic. The LDF has consistently received robust backing here, and Swaraj is a well-known figure,” Govindan remarked.
He also criticized Anvar, labeling him a “traitor” now seeking to join the Congress-led UDF.
Swaraj, aged 46, is recognized for his passionate speeches and made headlines in 2016 by defeating then-State Excise Minister and Congress stalwart K. Babu by around 5,000 votes in the Tripunithura Assembly seat. However, in 2021, Babu narrowly reclaimed the position, besting Swaraj by 1,232 votes.
This marks the first instance since 2006 that CPI-M is putting forth a party candidate from Nilambur.
