The son of the building owner arrested in connection with the fatal Satya Niketan building collapse in South Delhi, Mahesh, is set to be produced before the Patiala House Court on Wednesday, 9 September, after the conclusion of his two-day police remand. The five-storey structure, operating as a boys' paying guest (PG) facility under the name 'Hostel Daze', collapsed around 1:30 pm on Sunday, killing seven people, including students who were staying at the premises.

What Mahesh Told Investigators

During interrogation, Mahesh reportedly told investigators that he was responsible for managing the maintenance of the building on behalf of his parents — Urmila, 75, and her retired husband Hariram, 81. According to the police, the couple had leased the building to the PG operator 'Hostel Daze' in August 2025. The court had initially remanded Mahesh to two days of police custody on Monday.

His parents, Urmila and Hariram, were sent to 14 days of judicial custody on Tuesday, as investigators continue to examine the chain of responsibility for the building's structural condition and the allegedly unauthorised repairs underway at the time of the collapse.

Labour Contractor Arrested in Uttar Pradesh

In a significant development, Delhi Police arrested a labour contractor identified as Sanoj from Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. Sanoj had reportedly been overseeing repair work in the building's basement at the time of the incident. He is being brought to Delhi for further questioning, according to police officials.

Initial questioning of Sanoj revealed that the basement floor was being repaired on the day of the collapse, as waste had been accumulating there during the rainy season over the preceding eight to ten days. Police also said that the ground floor of the building was being extended for commercial purposes at the time — repairs that were reportedly underway without proper authorisation.

Civic Officials Suspended, Adjacent Building to Be Demolished

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been directed to demolish a dilapidated structure adjacent to the collapsed building, citing public safety concerns. The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) stated on social media platform X: 'On the instructions of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been directed to demolish the dilapidated building adjoining the accident site in the interest of public safety.'

The demolition order follows the suspension of five civic officials who were responsible for monitoring illegal construction in the colony near Delhi University's South Campus in the Dhaula Kuan area. Critics argue the suspensions, while swift, raise deeper questions about systemic oversight failures in a neighbourhood located close to a prominent university campus.
