New Delhi, Feb 8 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieved a landmark victory for the BJP in the Delhi Assembly elections, capturing 48 out of 70 seats. The PM pledged to implement a Rs 2,500 monthly payment for women, clean the Yamuna, present the CAG report in the Assembly, and fulfill the aspirations of Delhi residents through the full vigor of a double-engine government.
Expressing gratitude to the people of Delhi for their faith in “Modi ki Guarantee”, he addressed supporters at the BJP National Headquarters amidst celebratory vibes and promised to repay the trust of Delhi voters by steering the city back towards development.
“Delhi is a gateway to the country and deserves top-notch infrastructure,” he asserted.
He committed to presenting the CAG report – anticipated to reveal financial irregularities within the AAP government – during the first Assembly session of the newly formed BJP government, reiterating his vow that “Lootnewalon ko lotana padega” (The corrupt must pay).
PM Modi sharply criticized the ousted AAP, stating that the BJP's victory signifies the rejection of politics based on deception and shortcuts.
“The politics of shortcuts has been short-circuited by the voters of Delhi,” he remarked.
He emphasized that the politics of division, chaos, arrogance, and obstacles to development have been discarded.
“Those who viewed Delhi as their personal domain have been shown their true place,” he noted, emphasizing how NDA governments across states have fostered development and welfare.
In jest regarding AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, PM Modi commented: “Governance is not a stage for publicity or gimmickry.”
Additionally, PM Modi criticized Congress for once again achieving a zero in the Assembly elections.
“Congress has achieved a double hat-trick of zeros – failing to secure a single seat in the last three Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Delhi,” he stated.
Following a historic win with a 45.56 percent vote share, BJP officials remained tight-lipped regarding the Chief Minister candidate.
BJP's Delhi election in-charge Baijayant Panda mentioned that the new CM's name will be revealed after consultations over the next ten days.
Speculation arose throughout the day about Parvesh Verma, who defeated Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat, potentially being a frontrunner for the CM position.
However, Verma refrained from confirming or denying his candidacy for the top role.
“The party will determine the CM's name. I am dedicated to serving the people and working 20 hours a day like my father,” he said.
Meanwhile, the AAP acknowledged its defeat – following three consecutive wins in 2013, 2015, and 2020 – with dignity, vowing to play a constructive role in opposition.
The party made no mention of EVM manipulation or irregularities by the Election Commission, which had been raised during the campaign.
Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal stated: “We are not in politics for power. We view politics as a means to serve the people. Whether in government or opposition, we will stand by the people in their joys and sorrows, assisting them in any way possible.”
Chief Minister Atishi, the only prominent AAP figure to win from her Kalkaji seat, said the party will persist in opposing BJP's overreach.
On X, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi remarked, “We humbly accept the mandate of Delhi. Heartfelt thanks to all Congress workers and voters for their support. This struggle for the progress of Delhi and the rights of its citizens – against pollution, inflation, and corruption – will continue.”
In a related move, Lt Governor V.K. Saxena ordered the sealing of the Delhi Secretariat to prevent the removal of any files or computer hard disks, suggesting an imminent anti-corruption investigation into the ousted AAP government’s officials.
Celebrations erupted early at BJP offices as vote counting trends indicated the party was on track for power after 27 years.
Party members lit firecrackers, distributed sweets, and chanted “Modi, Modi” outside party offices.
The festivities continued into the evening when PM Modi delivered his victory address at the national headquarters.
In the recent election, voter turnout reached 60.54 percent. The BJP secured 45.56 percent of the vote share, while the AAP garnered 43.7 percent and Congress ended with 6.34 percent.
In 2020, AAP won 62 out of 70 seats with a 53.57 percent vote share. The BJP captured eight seats with 38.51 percent, and Congress obtained 4.26 percent of the votes, while others accounted for 3.66 percent. In 2015, AAP achieved 67 seats, securing 54.6 percent of the vote share.
