Kolkata, July 27 (NationPress) The depression that caused extensive rainfall in Kolkata and several districts of south Bengal has now moved past Jharkhand and is currently situated over Chhattisgarh.
According to the Met Office on Sunday, sporadic rain will persist in Kolkata and surrounding regions, with an increase in rainfall expected from Monday onwards.
Heavy rainfall is anticipated across nine districts in south Bengal over the coming days.
The low-pressure area that formed over the Bay of Bengal, which resulted in significant rainfall in West Bengal, has gradually shifted north-northwest towards Jharkhand and now rests over Chhattisgarh.
"The monsoon axis is currently active, creating favorable conditions for rain. Under this influence, rain will continue across West Bengal, with intensity increasing starting Monday," stated a weather department official.
The rainfall will be accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. "Consequently, the sea will be rough, and fishermen have been advised against venturing out to sea since Sunday," the official added.
From Monday, heavy rainfall is expected in the districts of Nadia, Murshidabad, Birbhum, West Burdwan, and East Burdwan.
On Tuesday, heavy rain may also affect Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Burdwan, and Bankura districts. Rain is likely to persist in some areas until Wednesday.
"In Kolkata and its suburbs, scattered rain is expected. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are anticipated in Kolkata on Tuesday, with winds reaching 30 to 40 km per hour," said the official.
The minimum temperature recorded in Kolkata on Sunday was 26.2 degrees Celsius, which is 0.5 degrees below normal. The maximum temperature on Saturday was 30.4 degrees Celsius, 2.2 degrees below normal.
Simultaneously, heavy rain is anticipated in the north Bengal districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar starting Sunday.
Moreover, significant rainfall is also expected in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts.
