Bhopal, May 3 (NationPress) The decision made by the Madhya Pradesh government to appoint Aruna Kumar as the new Director of Medical Education (DME) at Bhopal's Gandhi Medical College (GMC) has ignited a significant controversy.
This past Saturday, the Junior Doctors Association and the Medical Teachers Association (MTA) of GMC, the largest medical institution in the state, organized a protest against Kumar's appointment.
The protesting doctors have urged the state government to reverse its decision, referencing the tragic suicide of two junior doctors during her previous role as the Head of the Department (HoD) of gynaecology in 2023.
According to MTA General Secretary Rakesh Malviya, Kumar had been dismissed from GMC twice due to her inappropriate conduct with staff members.
Numerous complaints regarding her behavior have been reported by doctors and other personnel.
"Kumar was removed from her position as HoD of the gynaecology department after the suicide of junior doctor Bala Maheshwari at GMC's hostel. Her dismissal followed intervention from the Union Health Minister in 2023. We are astonished by the state government's choice to appoint her as the new DME," Malviya conveyed to IANS.
Malviya also stated that a delegation from the MTA has met with Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, who also serves as the Health Minister of Madhya Pradesh, demanding a reversal of this decision.
"Today’s protest is merely a warning; if the government does not retract its decision, all junior doctors and medical staff will initiate an indefinite strike, and the government will be responsible for any disruption in medical services at GMC," he warned.
During the protest at GMC, doctors displayed pamphlets and banners featuring images of Bala Saraswati, a medical student from Hyderabad who tragically took her life at GMC in July 2023.
Authorities discovered a suicide note from WhatsApp messages in which she indicated that persistent mental harassment from Aruna Kumar led her to this tragic decision.
Subsequently, in January 2024, a 27-year-old junior doctor, Akanksha Maheswari, from Gwalior, also died by suicide, attributing her actions to the toxic environment at GMC.
After these incidents, Aruna Kumar was removed from her role as HoD of gynaecology; however, she was reinstated a few months later as HoD of obstetrics and gynaecology.
