Kolkata, October 12 (NationPress) A court has placed three young men in police custody for a duration of 10 days in connection with the gang-rape incident that occurred in Durgapur, West Bengal.

The suspects were presented before the Durgapur Sub-divisional Court.

The judge directed that the accused be held in police custody for a period of 10 days.

Reports indicate that the suspects forcibly took the mobile phone and ₹5,000 from a medical student while subjecting her to torture.

Police authorities have confirmed that the girl's mobile phone was recovered from the detained individuals.

Additionally, law enforcement claims to have uncovered direct evidence linking the three arrested individuals to the crime.

A forensic team has also arrived at the crime scene to gather crucial evidence.

The three individuals implicated in the Durgapur gang-rape case have been identified as Seikh Reajuddin, Apu Bauri, and Firdos Seikh.

Authorities are actively searching for two additional suspects related to this case.

On the previous Friday, a second-year medical student from Odisha was reportedly gang-raped outside her campus in Durgapur after she stepped out with a male friend for dinner.

The police report states that the medical student and her friend were confronted by a group of young men on motorcycles who made inappropriate remarks.

These men allegedly intimidated the male friend, dragged the medical student into a forested area behind the campus, and assaulted her.

The suspects also stole the victim's mobile phone and discarded it.

When the male friend returned with others from the medical college, they discovered the injured student on the ground.

She was subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment.

A formal complaint has been lodged at the Durgapur New Township Police against five individuals.

Following the incident, police detained the male friend of the victim for questioning.

Deputy Magistrate Ranjana Roy has also spoken to the medical student and documented her statement.

After apprehending the three suspects, they were presented to the male friend of the victim.

A classmate of the medical student was able to identify all three suspects.

The victim was also shown photographs of the three accused and successfully identified them as well.

In a poignant appeal, the father of the Durgapur rape victim has requested West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to allow him to take his daughter back to Odisha, expressing grave concerns for her safety in the state.

"My daughter is suffering. She is currently bedridden and cannot walk. I fear for her safety here. There is a real possibility of harm to her life. We wish to take her back to Odisha where she can continue her education safely," he shared with the media.

The West Bengal Doctors' Forum has labeled the incident as a stark reminder that women remain vulnerable, even within educational institutions, and has called for justice for the victim along with a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Members of the forum, alongside representatives from 'Abhaya Mancha', visited the hospital in Durgapur where the victim is receiving care.

Meanwhile, leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including Locket Chatterjee, were prevented from entering the hospital in Durgapur.

After being barred by law enforcement, the BJP leaders organized a protest outside the hospital, clashing with police while demanding to meet the victim.

Chatterjee questioned, "Why are the police present inside the hospital? This facility, referred to as the 'Emergency' building, is meant to be operational 24/7. The police presence is due to directives from the Chief Minister. Why should law enforcement be inside while the doctors remain outside? It feels as though Mamata Banerjee's administration resembles a regime akin to Taliban or Pakistan."
