During a press briefing on Sunday, Sovana Mohanty, Chairperson of the OSCW, stated, "We are planning a visit to West Bengal with other members of the OSCW to assess the victim's health condition and ensure she is receiving appropriate medical care. Her health is improving. We have also been in discussions with representatives of the West Bengal Women's Commission regarding this matter."
Mohanty further revealed that the OSCW has sent formal communications to the West Bengal Women's Commission and local police, requesting intervention in the case.
She noted that she maintains contact with the local district administration in Balasore, the victim's hometown.
Mohanty expressed that the incident involving the Odisha girl in Durgapur is a shocking, reprehensible, and tragic occurrence.
She also informed the press that the Odisha Government has reached out to the West Bengal government, calling for immediate and stringent action to ensure the perpetrators of this horrific act face the maximum penalty.
The Odisha Government has been communicating with the victim's family to guarantee she receives all necessary medical assistance.
Additionally, the OSCW chairperson criticized the West Bengal government's handling of the law and order situation in the region.
"Individuals from the minority community are implicated in the brutal gang-rape of the Odisha girl," she noted.
On Sunday, police apprehended three suspects related to the gang-rape of the second-year medical student from a private medical college in West Burdwan district's Durgapur.
While the police have not disclosed the names of those arrested, they assured that the remaining suspects will be detained shortly.
According to police reports, the student had left her campus with a male friend for dinner on Friday night when a group of young men on motorcycles began to follow them, making inappropriate remarks. The assailants allegedly separated the male friend from the group, dragged the student into a wooded area behind the campus, and assaulted her.
They also took her mobile phone and discarded it. The male friend returned with others from the college and discovered the injured student on the ground; she was subsequently taken to a local hospital.
Authorities confirmed that she is a resident of Jaleswar, Odisha.
