Kochi, Feb 6 (NationPress) – The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has executed search operations at 10 locations in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, resulting in the freezing of assets and properties valued at ₹44.5 crore related to an ongoing investment fraud investigation, an official disclosed on Friday.
This operation is part of the probe into the alleged fraudulent activities and misuse of investor funds by Nedumparambil Credit Syndicate (NCS) based in Kerala, along with associated entities overseen by Raju George and his family, as stated by the official.
The ED's Kochi Zonal Office initiated searches on Thursday under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.
The inquiry stems from multiple FIRs lodged by Kerala Police at Pulikeezhu Police Station in Pathanamthitta and Muvattupuzha Police Station in Ernakulam against principal figures of the NCS Group for various offenses, including cheating as per Section 420 of the IPC, 1860, according to the ED.
In light of these initial offenses, an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) was filed on July 1, 2024, leading to a financial investigation under the PMLA.
A preliminary inquiry disclosed that public deposits were solicited with promises of high returns, followed by the diversion, layering, and utilization of the illegal proceeds through inter-group financial transfers, dealings with external entities, and asset acquisitions, the ED reported.
Evidence collected during these searches indicated a connection between the NCS Group and related entities, showcasing extensive property acquisitions, cash transactions, investments in financial products, and gold loan dealings associated with the accused.
During the searches, incriminating documents, digital devices, and financial records were seized.
Evidence related to properties tied to the group has been identified, including high-value acquisitions suspected to originate from illicit gains.
To avert the concealment or dissipation of these assets, properties linked to the primary accused and associates amounting to ₹44.5 crore were frozen under Section 17(1-A) of the PMLA.
“The seized materials are undergoing thorough scrutiny to trace the entirety of the illegal proceeds, quantify the diversion of funds and assets, identify beneficiaries, and establish the offense of money laundering under the PMLA,” the ED remarked.
