Mumbai, July 1 (NationPress) In a decisive action against the politician-builder-official nexus, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at 16 locations, including architect offices, linked to the illegal construction of residential and commercial properties on 60 acres of government land in Maharashtra's Vasai-Virar area.
On that Tuesday, an ED team initiated a search at a site in the Padmaraj building located in Vasai West.
According to local residents, investigators arrived around 7 a.m. in two vehicles.
The investigation highlights a significant land scam where the accused misled home and office buyers by creating false documentation and executing construction on both government and private lands, subsequently selling these illegitimate properties. An ED official noted that civic agencies had already demolished 41 illegal buildings in February of this year.
This case concerns the unauthorized construction of mixed-use buildings on government and private lands under the jurisdiction of the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) since 2009, according to the ED.
Key figures in this extensive scam have been identified, including Sitaram Gupta, Arun Gupta, and Y.S. Reddy, the Deputy Director of Town Planning in the civic agency.
Previously, in May, the ED had conducted searches at 13 different locations across Mumbai and Hyderabad, resulting in the seizure of cash and jewelry valued at nearly Rs 32 crore linked to the illegal construction activities in Vasai-Virar.
During the searches at Reddy's property, a staggering Rs 8.6 crore along with diamond-studded jewelry and bullion worth Rs 23.25 crore were confiscated, as stated by an official.
Over time, 41 illegal structures were erected on land designated for a Sewage Treatment Plant and a Dumping Ground according to the approved development plan of Vasai Virar city.
The ED noted that despite being aware of the unauthorized nature of these buildings and their inevitable demolition, the developers deceived individuals by selling units within these constructions, thus committing significant fraud.
The Bombay High Court ordered the demolition of all 41 structures on July 8, 2024. Following this, a Special Leave Petition by families residing in these illegal buildings was dismissed by the Supreme Court.
The VVMC completed the demolition of all 41 buildings by February 20, 2025.
