Chennai, Sep 23 (NationPress) AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami showcased his considerable influence in Gobichettipalayam on Tuesday, attracting a crowd of thousands to his campaign in the territory dominated by rebel MLA K.A. Sengottaiyan.

The significant turnout was part of Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s Makkalai Kaappom, Tamizhagathai Meetpom tour, setting the stage for the AIADMK–BJP alliance as they gear up for the 2026 Assembly elections.

This marked Edappadi K. Palaniswami's initial visit to the constituency since the expulsion of rebel MLA K.A. Sengottaiyan from his organizational roles after publicly defying the leadership earlier this month.

In his appeal for unity within the AIADMK, Sengottaiyan emphasized, “Those who need to understand must understand. To achieve success in the 2026 Assembly election, we all must unite and collaborate with a collective spirit.”

His remarks from earlier this month provoked a strong response from the party leadership.

By removing the senior leader from all party positions for advocating a return of all leaders to the AIADMK fold, Edappadi K. Palaniswami demonstrated his firm control over the party, even in western Tamil Nadu, where Sengottaiyan has long held influence.

During his previous campaign launch in July at Mettupalayam, Sengottaiyan had distanced himself by not organizing a reception, showcasing the internal rift within the AIADMK.

However, Tuesday’s gathering flipped the narrative, with over 2,000 party members assembling at the bus stand to welcome Edappadi K. Palaniswami, led by former Minister K.C. Karuppannan, Perundurai MLA S. Jayakumar, and new district secretary A.K. Selvaraj.

In a predictable move, Sengottaiyan was absent, reportedly staying in Chennai.

Edappadi K. Palaniswami then continued to Sathyamangalam, where Bhavanisagar MLA A. Bannari joined him before proceeding to the Nilgiris.

The reception in Gobichettipalayam was perceived by AIADMK insiders as a response to internal dissent and a message to the ruling DMK.

With the AIADMK–BJP alliance poised to contest against Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s government in 2026, Edappadi K. Palaniswami's campaign is being depicted as a consolidation of the Opposition front, emphasizing his role as the unquestioned leader of the coalition.

Point of View

Edappadi K. Palaniswami's recent rally in Gobichettipalayam serves as a critical moment in Tamil Nadu politics. The significant turnout emphasizes his authoritative role within the AIADMK and the challenges posed by internal dissent. As the political landscape shifts, how Palaniswami navigates these turbulent waters will shape the future of the party and its alliance with the BJP.
