EPFO WhatsApp service launched: Check PF balance, passbook on your phone
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Sunday, 1 November 2026 launched a new WhatsApp-based service for Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) subscribers, enabling them to access PF balance, latest five transactions, and passbook details directly through the messaging platform. The launch took place during the 74th Foundation Day celebration of EPFO in New Delhi.
What the WhatsApp Service Offers
The new service allows EPF subscribers to retrieve account information through a platform most of them already use daily, removing the need to visit EPFO offices for routine queries. Subscribers will also receive personalised guidance and assistance for completing PMVBRY-related requirements through the same channel.
Mandaviya said the service is designed to make routine functions accessible through a familiar mobile interface, easing pressure on physical offices and cutting wait times for members across the country.
Auto-Settlement for Inoperative Accounts
In a significant process reform announced alongside the WhatsApp launch, Aadhaar-verified inoperative EPF accounts with balances of up to ₹1,000 will no longer require individual claim filings. EPFO will instead initiate settlement automatically after prescribed identity and bank-account verification, transferring eligible dues directly to rightful beneficiaries.
Approximately one lakh accounts involving a combined balance of ₹5 crore are expected to benefit from this change, according to the organisation.
EPFO at 74: Scale and Technology
Addressing the Foundation Day gathering, Mandaviya underscored EPFO's growth over its 74-year journey, pointing to a corpus of ₹32 lakh crore accumulated through contributions from more than 8 crore members. He credited the organisation's workforce for the trust members have reposed in it.
The minister also commended the technological overhaul driven by CITES 2.01, calling on every official to focus on last-mile worker welfare. The impact of the platform was evident in claim settlement data — the average settlement time has fallen to 2.57 days in October 2026, a marked improvement from earlier benchmarks.
Seven publications were released on the occasion, reflecting EPFO's commitment to institutional learning, legal awareness, and what officials described as compassionate governance.
What Officials Said
Secretary, Labour and Employment, Chandra Bhushan Kumar emphasised that social protection and labour reforms must reach beyond the organised sector to unorganised workers at the last mile, citing EPFO as a model of institutionalised outreach.
The Central Provident Fund Commissioner reiterated that institutional trust is built through every claim settled, every pension delivered, and every family supported during difficult times — and that the ultimate measure of EPFO's success is the confidence experienced by its members and pensioners.
What Comes Next
With EPFO approaching its 75th year, the minister urged officials to accelerate worker-centric innovations across all domains, adapting processes to keep pace with evolving technology and member expectations. The auto-settlement reform and WhatsApp integration together signal a broader push toward a friction-free provident fund ecosystem ahead of that milestone.
