Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday, 17 August, to brief him on the state's development agenda, infrastructure milestones, and ongoing Centre-State initiatives. Fadnavis also submitted a comprehensive memorandum seeking enhanced central assistance for key state projects — and categorically dismissed opposition speculation about him moving to national politics.

What Was Discussed

The discussions spanned a wide range of infrastructure priorities, including highway networks, railway connectivity, metro expansion, and river-linking projects. Fadnavis delivered a status report on industrial and social sector schemes and requested stronger support from the Government of India for joint programmes already under implementation.

'I met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and briefed him on the administration and various ongoing projects in Maharashtra. I also submitted updates on joint Centre-State initiatives and detailed the support expected from the Central Government. Whenever we seek assistance and hold discussions, it yields positive outcomes, and today's discussion was equally fruitful,' Fadnavis told reporters after the meeting.

PM's Office Acknowledges the Meeting

The Prime Minister's Office issued an official acknowledgement of the meeting, confirming that Chief Minister Fadnavis called on Prime Minister Modi. Fadnavis described the interaction as 'motivating' and said the Prime Minister's guidance on developmental issues had been a source of 'positive energy' for the state administration.

Meetings With Union Ministers

Fadnavis also held separate meetings with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav. With Sitharaman, he submitted a proposal related to a JICA-funded project and confirmed that Maharashtra would incorporate the ministry's suggestions into the scheme. With Yadav, he followed up on critical environmental and forest clearances required to unblock several state development projects.

Fadnavis Dismisses Rumours of Delhi Move

When reporters pressed him on opposition speculation that his Delhi visit signalled an impending shift to central politics, Fadnavis was unequivocal. He said Prime Minister Modi and the people of Maharashtra had entrusted him with the responsibility of serving the state, and he intended to continue doing so from Mumbai.

'Whether I am in Delhi or Mumbai, rumours inevitably start. Many idle people take pleasure in gossiping about me, so let them enjoy themselves. Whatever wild assumptions they want to make, or kites and balloons they want to fly, let them go ahead,' he said.

The meeting comes as Maharashtra pushes to accelerate several large-scale infrastructure projects that require coordinated central funding and regulatory clearances. With assembly priorities and state finances under scrutiny, Fadnavis's direct outreach to the Centre signals that Maharashtra is pressing hard to fast-track approvals in the near term.
