CM Fadnavis clears ₹80.26 cr memorial for Sant Rupalalji
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A saint who spent his life dismantling superstition and spreading social reform across Vidarbha is now set to be honoured with a national memorial that Maharashtra's government hopes will anchor an entire pilgrimage economy. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis chaired a high-level meeting at Varsha residence, Mumbai, on Thursday, 29 October 2026, and approved a development blueprint worth ₹80.26 crore for the Shri Sant Shiromani Rupalalji Maharaj National Memorial — to be built at Mouje Jethmalpur, Anjangaon Surji, Amravati district.
The saint behind the stone: who was Sant Rupalalji Maharaj?
Shri Sant Rupalalji Maharaj is revered as a torchbearer of the reformist tradition carried forward by Sant Gadge Baba and Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj — two of Maharashtra's most celebrated saint-reformers. His life's work centred on samajprabodhan (social awakening), the eradication of blind faith, and the propagation of the Warakari Sampradaya, the bhakti pilgrimage tradition rooted in devotion to Vithoba. CM Fadnavis invoked this lineage explicitly at the meeting, noting that the memorial would carry the saint's message of reason and devotion to a new generation.
Fourteen facilities, two phases, one transformative campus
The approved blueprint is ambitious in scope. Across Phase 1 and Phase 2, the campus at Anjangaon Surji will include a Sabhamandap (assembly hall), a Pothi-vachan hall for scriptural recitation, a yoga centre, a museum, the Annapurna building, the Shahanur building, a Dindi assembly hall, a dormitory, the Chandrabhaaga building, a discourse hall, a multipurpose hall, residential rooms, an administrative block, and staff quarters.
The infrastructure spine is equally significant: the plan includes a bridge over the Shahanur river, a 2.40-kilometre asphalt access road, a statue of Sant Rupalalji Maharaj, and installation of additional statues on the campus. These works are explicitly designed to ease pilgrim access — a telling acknowledgement that spiritual heritage and physical connectivity must travel together.
Vidarbha's pilgrimage-economy bet
Successive Maharashtra administrations have backed heritage-and-pilgrimage infrastructure in Vidarbha — a region that has historically lagged behind the coast in tourism receipts — as a dual-purpose tool: cultural preservation and local employment generation. The Rupalalji Maharaj memorial fits squarely into that pattern. CM Fadnavis flagged that modern, eco-friendly facilities would give a 'boost to religious tourism' and create 'new employment and business opportunities for local residents.'
MLA Dr Sanjay Kute and senior officials attended the meeting. Fadnavis directed that a formal land-proposal be submitted for the site at Mouje Jethmalpur before construction timelines are finalised.
With the blueprint sealed and the budget greenlit, the next milestone is groundbreaking — and the question of whether this Vidarbha site can grow into a pilgrimage destination that rivals the region's better-known spiritual circuits.
