Bhopal, Oct 12 (NationPress) A viral video depicting a young man washing the feet of another individual and issuing a public apology in Sataria village, located under the jurisdiction of Patera police station in Damoh district, has ignited a significant debate and triggered immediate police intervention.
The incident, which unfolded on Saturday night, prompted the Damoh district police to file an FIR against six people.
The footage, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, showcases Purushottam Kushwaha, a local resident, washing the feet of another man while expressing regret.
As per police reports, this act was allegedly a reaction to a prior video featuring Purushottam, where he recorded a youth named Annu purportedly consuming and selling alcohol in the village, despite a community-imposed ban on liquor.
The earlier video displayed Annu adorned with a garland of shoes, which incited outrage and calls for a public apology.
Under pressure from community members, Purushottam removed the video from Instagram and was compelled to perform the foot-washing ritual, along with paying a fine of Rs 5,100.
The widespread circulation of the apology video gained further traction when a social media influencer shared it as breaking news, escalating the controversy. In response, the police enacted preventive measures to ensure tranquility in Sataria.
Regular patrols have been initiated, and senior officers alongside respected local figures have been assigned to interact with residents to alleviate tensions.
On its official X account, Damoh Police, under the leadership of Superintendent of Police Shrutkirti Somvanshi, stated: “The police have acknowledged the incident that transpired in Sataria village, under the jurisdiction of Patera police station, and have lodged an FIR related to the matter. To maintain law and order, preventive measures are being implemented against both parties involved. Continuous patrolling has commenced in the area, and senior officers along with reputable local citizens have been deployed to engage with residents and help sustain peace and harmony.”
While the police have not released the identities of those named in the FIR, they confirmed that four individuals recognized in the video have been charged, alongside two unidentified individuals.
The Kushwaha community has submitted a memorandum urging swift arrests and the application of pertinent sections under the IT Act.
Police officials also indicated that they are investigating whether AI or other digital tools were utilized to tarnish the individual's reputation. The investigation is still ongoing.
