Kolkata, July 3 (NationPress) The West Bengal Medical Council has declared the medical registration suspension of former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Santanu Sen for a period of two years.

Sen, who is a practicing physician, faced suspension from the party due to allegations of anti-party activities following his disagreements with party leadership regarding the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital rape and murder case that occurred last year.

Notably, Sen is a graduate of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital.

Throughout this two-year period, he will be unable to use the title “Dr” in front of his name or provide prescriptions to patients. The suspension arises from his use of the postgraduate qualification, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Glasgow), on his letterhead without the required registration with the state medical council.

A spokesperson for the council revealed that an email was sent to Glasgow recently to verify whether Sen could utilize that claimed degree on his professional letterhead, but no response has been received.

Sen had previously served as a state government representative on the West Bengal Medical Council for an extended time. However, after his disagreements with party leadership regarding the R.G. Kar case became apparent, he faced suspension from the party and subsequent removal from the council.

In response to the situation, Sen argued that the actions taken against him stemmed from vendetta by certain members within the council.

“I submitted all necessary documents for the registration of my qualification, along with a fee of Rs 10,000. Following that, I sent multiple letters and emails to inquire about the status. I even filed an application under the RTI Act, yet received no responses. I feel victimized,” Sen asserted.

Point of View

The suspension of Santanu Sen highlights the critical need for accountability in both political and medical professions. As the West Bengal Medical Council takes action, it underscores the importance of ethical conduct and transparency within the healthcare system. This case serves as a reminder that all professionals, regardless of their political affiliations, must adhere to the highest standards of integrity.
