Chandigarh, Nov 29 (NationPress) Architect Shivdatt Sharma, known for his collaboration with Le Corbusier, the mastermind behind monumental cities like Chandigarh, was awarded the title of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) on Saturday by the French Ambassador to India, Thierry Mathou.

This prestigious French accolade acknowledges Sharma's remarkable contributions to modern architecture, his lifelong dedication to preserving Corbusier's legacy, and his efforts in fostering a cultural exchange between France and India.

A self-taught architect with exceptional prowess, Sharma embarked on his professional journey in Chandigarh during a pivotal era for the city.

Recognized for his elegant design sensibilities, he joined the team of Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, contributing to one of the 20th century's most ambitious urban development projects. This formative experience shaped his architectural perspective, influencing his role as Chief Architect of the Indian Space Research Organisation, where he adeptly harmonized advanced technological needs with sustainable and contextual design.

In commending the esteemed architect, Ambassador Mathou stated, "By honoring Shivdatt Sharma, France pays homage to a visionary whose career continuously enlightens public appreciation of modern architecture and its cultural significance.

Sharma played a crucial role in the original Chandigarh Capital Project team.

He was instrumental in realizing significant works by Corbusier, such as the Government Museum and Art Gallery and the Museum of Evolution of Life.

Throughout the subsequent decades, he cultivated a unique architectural style that was profoundly influenced by Indian contexts. His leadership as Chief Architect of ISRO underscores his expertise in designing complex research facilities tailored to the local climate and constructed with indigenous materials.
