A fresh police complaint was filed on Monday against All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary and Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee at Bishnupur Police Station in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, alleging massive irregularities in a Mega COVID-19 Testing Drive camp held in January 2022. The complaint adds to a growing list of allegations against Banerjee, who is also the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

What the Complaint Alleges

Local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Avijit Das, also known as Bobby, filed the written complaint, alleging the unlawful use of state government equipment during the COVID-19 testing camp organised by Banerjee within his Diamond Harbour parliamentary constituency. Das has demanded that police register an FIR and launch a separate investigation into the matter.

According to the complaint, a total of 53,203 samples were tested in a single day across 260 testing centres, 23 mobile units, and 30 kiosks in Diamond Harbour. Das pointed out that the average daily sample testing across the entire state at that time stood at approximately 70,000, and argued that the scale and conduct of the camp warranted scrutiny. “It should be investigated whether the 53,203 diagnostic kits used were procured in accordance with statutory rules or not,” Das said in the complaint.

Who Else Is Named

Beyond Abhishek Banerjee, the complaint names 26 others as persons whose roles must be probed, including the then District Magistrate of South 24 Parganas and the then Superintendent of Police of Diamond Harbour Police District. Das has urged police to examine all documents related to the tests conducted during the camp.

Broader Pattern of Allegations

This complaint does not stand in isolation. Allegations of severe irregularities have already been raised regarding the free Sebashray health camps organised by Banerjee in his Diamond Harbour constituency during the previous Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government. Both the West Bengal Health Department and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police are currently conducting simultaneous probes into those Sebashray camp allegations.

The fresh COVID-19 testing camp complaint adds another layer to the scrutiny facing Banerjee, who has emerged as a key figure in the TMC's political machinery and is widely regarded as a potential successor to Mamata Banerjee's leadership in the state.

Police at Bishnupur Police Station are yet to confirm whether an FIR has been registered based on the complaint. The BJP's move to file a fresh case signals an intensification of political pressure on Banerjee at a time when multiple state agencies are already examining health camp irregularities linked to his constituency.
