The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the manufacturing licence of Rehaan Healthcare following an inspection that uncovered severe violations at the company's health supplements and nutraceuticals facility, the regulator announced on Friday, 24 July. The unit recorded an overall compliance score of just 12%, which FSSAI classified as indicating 'very serious failure and non-compliance of existing provisions.'

What the Inspection Found

Inspectors documented conditions described as extremely unhygienic and disorganised. Sediments of filth and sludge had accumulated beneath manufacturing tanks, raw materials were stored haphazardly, and housekeeping standards were found to be critically poor — all flagged as posing a serious risk of cross-contamination.

The inspection further revealed spider webs, mould growth, flies, insects and exposed food waste within the active manufacturing area. Infrastructure deficiencies included inadequate storage arrangements, insufficient workspace, poor ventilation and lighting, damaged infrastructure, pest infestation, and the absence of a valid drinking water test report.

Why FSSAI Calls It a Public Health Threat

The regulator specifically highlighted the nature of the products manufactured at the facility — digestive syrups, multivitamin syrups and other syrup-based food products — as a key aggravating factor. Because health supplements and nutraceuticals are consumed by children and other vulnerable groups, FSSAI said the conditions at the unit posed 'a serious and imminent threat to public health.'

'As the unit manufactures health supplements and nutraceuticals, a high-risk category of food consumed by children and other vulnerable groups, the unhygienic conditions and failure of food safety controls pose a serious and imminent threat to public health,' the regulator stated.

Immediate Directions and Legal Warning

FSSAI has ordered Rehaan Healthcare to immediately halt all food business activities and manufacturing operations. The suspension remains in effect until all identified deficiencies are rectified and compliance is independently verified by the competent authority. The regulator also warned that legal action would be initiated if the company is found to have violated the suspension order.

The action against Rehaan Healthcare is part of an intensified enforcement campaign that FSSAI has been running in recent months. The regulator has issued notices to several e-commerce platforms and taken action against food and beverage companies over misleading claims, labelling violations and non-compliance with food safety regulations. According to FSSAI, these enforcement actions are driven by consumer complaints, suo motu cognisance, and routine inspections conducted by food safety officers.

Notably, this is not an isolated case — the authority has been systematically tightening scrutiny across the food processing and supplements sector, signalling a shift toward stricter, more proactive regulation. The next step for Rehaan Healthcare will be demonstrating full rectification before any licence reinstatement can be considered.
