Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Somnath, Feb 17 (NationPress) The Gir Somnath district in Gujarat has become a significant focal point in the state government's enhanced efforts to eradicate tuberculosis (TB). Health teams are actively conducting door-to-door screenings while broadening diagnostic services across various talukas.
This initiative is part of the state government's 'Bhagirath Abhiyan', which is bolstered by the Central government's support, contributing to the larger national objective of achieving a TB-free India.
According to officials, teams comprising health workers, ASHA workers, and paramedical personnel are visiting villages and remote forested areas to perform health assessments and detect potential cases as part of the ongoing Active Case Finding (ACF) initiative.
District TB Officer Sheetal Ram stated that both screening and diagnosis are provided at no cost. “We previously had two machines for TB testing in our district, but now we have added six more. Thanks to the support from the District Mineral Foundation and the District Collector, these machines are accessible at each taluka level. Testing and diagnosis via these machines will incur no charges, while a typical test costs around Rs 1,500,” she explained.
Officials indicated that funding for the campaign is allocated at the taluka level by the District Collector to guarantee continuous screening and treatment services.
Authorities emphasized that the ACF drive is not limited to urban areas but has also been expanded to rural regions and forest-adjacent locales to enhance coverage.
In response to an appeal from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, numerous NGOs, business leaders, social activists, and private hospitals in the district have rallied behind the campaign.
Many have stepped up as 'Nikshay Mitras', a voluntary initiative where individuals and organizations provide extra support to TB patients.
In addition to government assistance, patients are receiving nutritional support kits to facilitate their recovery.
Mandal Ravalia, a Nikshay Mitra, remarked, “Patients are experiencing relief after receiving medication, and nutritional kits are also being distributed. This initiative is truly benefiting even the most vulnerable sections of society. It’s an excellent scheme.”
Family members of beneficiaries have also expressed their gratitude for the support.
Ashwin Jhala mentioned, “There is also the Swasthya Sahay Yojana, which offers assistance upon bill submission. A special campaign initiated by the Prime Minister allows social and political figures to adopt TB patients and ensure their treatment.”
Jagu Mori added, “The government's program is commendable, and even the most marginalized individuals in society can benefit from it. We are deeply appreciative of the government's efforts.”
Officials affirmed that the campaign aims to enhance early detection and guarantee free treatment as part of a broader initiative to lessen the TB burden in the district.
