Piyush Goyal Heads to Chennai for Vital NDA Seat-Sharing Negotiations Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 22 (NationPress) Union Minister Piyush Goyal, responsible for the BJP's electoral strategy in Tamil Nadu, is scheduled to arrive in Chennai on March 23 for crucial discussions focused on solidifying seat-sharing agreements within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
This visit is timely, as negotiations among alliance partners are still ongoing, with the Assembly elections fast approaching.
The NDA in Tamil Nadu, led by AIADMK, includes significant allies such as the BJP, PMK, AMMK, and IJK. However, formal discussions around seat-sharing have been postponed, even as political activity surges throughout the state.
Goyal's arrival is anticipated to inject the necessary momentum to clarify and reach a consensus among alliance members.
This renewed focus on negotiations follows a series of high-level meetings that took place in Delhi earlier this week.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami discussed electoral strategies and alliance coordination with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Leaders from other NDA partners, including AMMK’s T.T.V. Dhinakaran and PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss, have also met with HM Shah to express their expectations regarding seat distribution.
Originally, Goyal was expected to visit Chennai the previous week to commence talks, but the trip was delayed for unspecified reasons. With the new schedule confirmed, he is expected to arrive at approximately 10 a.m. on Sunday to consult with key NDA leaders before heading back to Delhi later that day.
According to sources within the BJP, the party aims to contest between 30 and 35 constituencies in Tamil Nadu.
The BJP is particularly focused on securing significant urban seats in Chennai, including Velachery, T. Nagar, and Mylapore, along with selected constituencies in western Tamil Nadu where it perceives stronger prospects.
Meanwhile, discussions are also ongoing regarding the allocation of the remaining seats among alliance partners. BJP leaders are optimistic that around 50 constituencies may be allocated to smaller allies and other partners within the NDA.
With nomination dates approaching, all attention is on Goyal’s upcoming meetings in Chennai, which are expected to be pivotal in finalizing the NDA's seat-sharing strategy and shaping the alliance’s electoral approach for the forthcoming Assembly elections.
