How is Gujarat Celebrating Its Foundation Day?

New Delhi, May 1 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday conveyed his warm wishes to the people of Gujarat as they celebrate their state's Foundation Day, recognizing their remarkable contributions in various sectors and honoring the state's distinctive identity.

This marks the 65th Gujarat Foundation Day, observed every year on May 1 since the state's establishment in 1960.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister expressed, "On this momentous occasion of their Statehood Day, I offer my best wishes to the citizens of Gujarat. The state has made a name for itself through its rich culture, entrepreneurial spirit, and vibrancy. The people of Gujarat have thrived in numerous areas."

"May the state continue to reach new pinnacles of progress," he added.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who also serves as the Lok Sabha MP from Gujarat's Gandhinagar constituency, took to social media to extend his wishes to the people of Gujarat on this significant day.

"Warm greetings on Gujarat Day to all the sisters and brothers of Gujarat, renowned for its diverse natural resources, rich historical and cultural heritage, and unparalleled hospitality," he wrote on X.

"Gujarat has consistently drawn individuals from across the globe with its talent, diligence, and practical skills. I pray to Dada Somnath for the continued advancement and elevation of the people of Gujarat, who have made groundbreaking contributions to the nation from the Bhakti movement to the freedom struggle and beyond," he added.

This day is popularly known as Gujarat Gaurav Din or Gujarat Sthapana Divas and coincides with Maharashtra Din, celebrating the formation of Maharashtra and Gujarat. On May 1, 1960, the bilingual Bombay State was officially split into two separate states—Gujarat and Maharashtra—based on linguistic criteria.

The reorganization of Indian states following Independence was significantly influenced by strong demands for linguistic identities.

The Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti, established in 1956, was among the key groups advocating for a Marathi-speaking state, while parallel movements called for a distinct Gujarati-speaking state.

In response to these rising demands, the Indian government formed a commission to address the issues at hand.

The recommendations from that commission ultimately resulted in the bifurcation of Bombay State, leading to the creation of Maharashtra and Gujarat. To maintain equality, both states were inaugurated on the same date—May 1, 1960.

Today, Gujarat stands as a beacon of commerce, industry, and cultural richness, with its citizens playing pivotal roles in India's economic and social advancement.
