Gandhinagar/Nagpur, April 10 (NationPress) A remarkable achievement has been made by a sniffer dog from the Gujarat Police, who has claimed a national gold medal, breaking a 16-year streak without such a win. This victory was secured in the tracking category at the prestigious 69th All India Police Duty Meet (AIPDM) held in Nagpur, Maharashtra, as announced by officials on Friday.

The dog named ‘Check’, a male from Gujarat Police, not only clinched the gold medal in tracking but also brought home a bronze medal in the overall tracking category during the championship that took place in March and April 2026.

This national event witnessed participation from police K9 units, forensic experts, and personnel nationwide, with competitions designed to evaluate skills in areas such as explosive detection, narcotics detection, tracking, agility, and obedience.

In the tracking competition, ‘Check’ stood out among 45 dogs representing various state police forces and paramilitary units, finishing in first place.

Overall, the meet featured over 200 dogs competing across different categories.

The Gujarat Police deployed six dogs across three categories—tracking, explosive detection, and narcotics detection—entering two canines in each category.

The State Director General of Police (DGP), Dr. K.L.N. Rao, personally congratulated ‘Check’, his handler Ramesh Khant, and police dog training consultant Colonel Chandan Singh Rathod at the Police Bhavan in Gandhinagar, presenting them with medals in recognition of their success.

Rathod expressed, “The Gujarat Police’s ‘Check’ dog has achieved a gold medal in tracking and also secured a bronze in the overall tracking category. Our hard work has truly paid off.”

Officials indicated that preparations for this national competition commenced well in advance.

A state-level police dog competition was conducted months prior under the guidance of Director General of Police (Training), Neerja Gotru.

Out of nine dogs selected for the national championship, six went on to participate in various events after undergoing specialized training, strict schedules, and meticulous care.

Currently, the Gujarat Police have approximately 160 trained dogs stationed across districts, assigned to tasks including explosive detection, narcotics detection, tracking in criminal investigations, and liquor detection.

This latest achievement marks the first gold medal for a Gujarat Police dog at the national Police Duty Meet in 16 years.
