New Delhi, Feb 20 (NationPress) BJP MLA-elect Vijender Gupta has been appointed as the Speaker of the new Delhi Assembly. He stated that the CAG report will be presented during the Assembly's inaugural session.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, Gupta mentioned that the party has chosen him for this significant role.
"This is an incredibly joyful moment; after 27 years, the BJP is forming the government in Delhi. We are participating in the oath-taking ceremony today. Congratulations to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and all the ministers. I’ve been designated as the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, and I will ensure that the Assembly operates according to its laws.
"I unequivocally state that as soon as I take on the role of Speaker, my first action will be to present the CAG report before the Delhi Assembly," he asserted.
Previously, CM-designate Rekha Gupta stated that the former AAP government would face scrutiny for corruption allegations. Minister-designate Manjinder Singh Sirsa emphasized in an interview with IANS that corruption cases will be unveiled, and those implicated will face imprisonment. "Indeed, the CAG report will be processed promptly and will be tabled in the first session. Additionally, we will expose corruption cases and ensure that those involved are jailed," he remarked.
The CAG report indicated considerable revenue losses attributed to irregularities in the Delhi government's excise policy. The audit report covering the liquor policy from 2017 to 2022 highlighted numerous violations related to quality control, licensing, pricing, and systemic enforcement failures, based on various reports. This audit encompasses three years under the old excise policy and one year under the now-repealed 2021-22 excise policy.
Gupta asserted that the Delhi Assembly is a temple of democracy governed by rules and regulations that must be adhered to.
"Sheesh Mahal is a troubling character; therefore, the BJP would prefer to avoid any association with it," he remarked.
Following the oath-taking of Rekha Gupta and her six ministers, the new Assembly session will be convened. A pro-tem Speaker will administer the oath to the 70 newly elected MLAs, after which the official Speaker will be appointed.
Since Gupta has confirmed to IANS that he has been designated by the party as Speaker, he is set to take the oath and preside over the House.
Ten years ago, Vijender Gupta was forcibly removed from the Delhi Assembly amid uproar over allegedly derogatory statements made by a party colleague, O.P. Sharma, regarding then-AAP MLA Alka Lamba. Footage from within the Assembly depicted Gupta being escorted out by several marshals as he resisted, clutching onto furniture. Previously, Gupta served as the Leader of the Opposition.
