Chennai, July 20 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange alert for the Nilgiris and the Western Ghats regions of Coimbatore, cautioning residents about the potential for very heavy rainfall on Sunday, driven by shifting weather patterns across South India.

This current spell of rain is linked to an east-west trough extending near the mean sea level, coupled with an upper air cyclonic circulation located over the northern interior of Karnataka and nearby areas.

These meteorological systems are predicted to deliver substantial rainfall to various parts of Tamil Nadu and neighboring states, with some locations expected to witness precipitation as high as 24.4 cm, as reported by the RMC.

According to the weather bureau, an orange alert signifies heavy to very heavy rainfall that may lead to potential disruptions and hazards.

Recent reports indicate that numerous areas within the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts experienced significant downpours. The Nilgiris recorded 11.8 cm of rainfall, while Chinnakalar in Coimbatore saw 11.2 cm in one day on Saturday. Other areas, such as Vint Worth Estate in the Nilgiris and Cincona in Coimbatore, noted 8.4 cm and 8.2 cm of rainfall, respectively, on the same day.

Heavy rains are anticipated to continue in Theni, Dindigul, and Tenkasi districts, with forecasts suggesting ongoing showers through Monday, July 21.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected at around 50% of weather stations throughout the state.

The RMC has highlighted that the southwest monsoon remains vigorous over Kerala, coastal and south interior Karnataka, as well as the Western Ghats districts of Tamil Nadu.

The intensified rainfall activity in Kerala is also impacting the adjacent Western Ghats regions of Tamil Nadu.

B. Amudha, Head (Additional In-Charge) of the RMC Chennai, noted that the presence of an upper air circulation over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and an east-west trough near the latitude of Chennai is causing widespread rain.

She further added that coastal districts of Tamil Nadu may encounter thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening due to the interaction between prevailing westerlies and the sea breeze.

While the rain is expected to lower maximum temperatures in certain areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, inland regions like Madurai and Karur might continue to experience high temperatures as the weather systems are unlikely to have a significant effect on those areas.
