Shillong, June 12 (NationPress) The tragic murder of Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya has taken a dark turn, as investigators uncovered a mangalsutra and a ring left in a suitcase by his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, at a Sohra homestay, according to the Meghalaya Police. This finding marked the initial significant lead in what has been identified as a disturbing case of contract killing, allegedly orchestrated by Sonam and her lover.
Raja, aged 29, and Sonam, 25, had recently celebrated their wedding in Indore on May 11 and arrived in Meghalaya on May 20 for their honeymoon. They disappeared on May 23 in Sohra, East Khasi Hills, just hours after departing from a homestay in Nongriat village.
On June 2, Raja's lifeless body was located in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls. The search for Sonam ended when she turned herself in at Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 9.
Authorities have also detained her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, along with three alleged contract killers hired by Sonam to execute the murder.
Meghalaya's Director General of Police (DGP) I Nongrang disclosed that the breakthrough in the case was achieved when law enforcement retrieved the mangalsutra and ring that Sonam had left behind at the Sohra homestay.
"A married woman abandoning her ornaments provided us with a lead to consider her a suspect in this case," Nongrang stated.
As per a police officer involved in the investigation, the couple had arrived at the Sohra homestay on May 22 without a reservation and were unable to find accommodation.
They left their bags at the property intending to trek over 3,000 steps to reach Nongriat village, known for its double-decker living root bridge.
The duo spent the night at a homestay in Nongriat and checked out early on May 23. After trekking back to Sohra, they picked up their scooter from a parking area and headed towards Weisawdong Falls.
It was at this site that Raja was reportedly murdered in front of Sonam by the three hired hitmen.
A tour guide later informed police that he had seen the couple accompanied by three Hindi-speaking men while they were trekking back from Nongriat to Sohra, a detail that significantly aided the probe.
"All five suspects have confessed to their involvement in the crime, and with the evidence collected, there's no room for denial," the officer stated.
The police confirmed that all five accused have admitted their participation in Raja’s murder.
A court in Shillong has since remanded Sonam, her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, and the three contract killers to eight days in police custody as investigations into this heinous crime continue.
