Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 2 (NationPress) The search for first-time Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, who has been evading authorities since a sexual assault complaint was lodged against him, has now entered its sixth day on Tuesday.
The complaint was submitted directly to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, which led the Kerala Police to initiate a thorough search amidst growing pressure from the ruling Left government to apprehend him before his anticipatory bail hearing on Wednesday.
Mamkootathil went into hiding just hours after the case was filed, and various police teams are currently investigating potential hideouts, including areas in Coimbatore and Bengaluru.
His disappearance has ignited a political uproar, with both the Left and the BJP accusing the Congress of providing cover for the fleeing legislator.
BJP leader Prashanth Sivan alleged on Tuesday that the red vehicle reportedly used by Mamkootathil to escape had been kept months prior at the residence of a Congress leader who had organized a meeting in support of him.
He further asserted that the state police were conducting merely a "superficial investigation" influenced by the CPI(M) leadership.
"This is an insincere probe meant to deceive the public. Congress leaders are shielding an MLA facing serious allegations. What message does this send to the women of Kerala?" he questioned, adding that there were indications Mamkootathil might be sheltered in the homes of Congress leaders in Palakkad.
In response, senior Congress leader and KPCC general secretary C. Chandran dismissed these allegations as "politically motivated".
He claimed no connection with the red vehicle, stating he had only used Mamkootathil's car once for a hospital visit when his own vehicle was under repair.
"The party has already initiated action against Mamkootathil. Assertions that Congress leaders are protecting him are unfounded," he stated.
Meanwhile, investigators are examining whether any Congress members assisted Mamkootathil in his evasion.
They have documented statements from the complainant's friends, one of whom mentioned that the woman was in significant physical and emotional distress following an abortion.
While public activist Rahul Eashwar was incarcerated on Monday for alleged derogatory comments about the victim, the police have registered 20 cases of cyber-abuse regarding online harassment targeting the complainant.
As political tensions rise and the investigations into the red car continue, the pressure on law enforcement to find the missing MLA has grown as the pivotal bail hearing looms.
