Bhubaneswar, March 14 (NationPress) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional center has issued a warning stating that severe heatwave conditions are anticipated to persist across various regions of Odisha until at least March 18.
In its severe heatwave alert for Odisha, the IMD cautioned that temperatures are expected to rise significantly from March 14 to 18, with several districts likely to face intense heat, warm nights, and elevated humidity levels. This situation poses increased health risks, particularly for young children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
Manorama Mohanty, the Director of IMD Bhubaneswar, has urged the public to take essential steps to safeguard against heatwave-related illnesses.
"The maximum temperature is climbing notably throughout Odisha, with certain areas experiencing temperatures 5-6 degrees Celsius above the norm. We recommend that individuals stay well-hydrated, limit direct sun exposure during peak hours, and adhere to safety guidelines," she stated.
Reports indicate that Jharsuguda measured a high of 40.2 degrees Celsius, while Sambalpur recorded temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius by 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
The western Odisha city of Jharsuguda noted the highest temperature in the state, reaching 41.4 degrees Celsius, on Thursday.
On Friday, IMD Bhubaneswar issued an Orange warning predicting that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are highly likely to occur in districts such as Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Mayurbhanj over the next three days. An Orange warning for severe heatwave conditions has also been issued for the Sundargarh, Boudh, and Balangir districts for the upcoming days.
The IMD has advised individuals to avoid sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., wear light and loose cotton clothing, and cover their heads when outside. It also recommended drinking plenty of fluids, such as ORS, lemon water, buttermilk, and sugarcane juice, while advising against alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated beverages, which can contribute to dehydration.
Farmers have been encouraged to ensure adequate irrigation for crops and provide water for livestock.
The agency has instructed the public to be vigilant for symptoms of heatstroke, including dizziness, nausea, and excessive sweating, and to seek medical assistance if necessary.
