Thiruvananthapuram, July 20 (NationPress) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised an orange alert for nine districts in Kerala on Sunday, indicating the possibility of exceptionally heavy rainfall.
The districts affected by the orange alert include Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
In addition, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam districts are under a yellow alert.
In light of the IMD's warning, the Kasaragod district administration has announced a holiday for all educational institutions on Sunday. This closure affects schools, colleges, professional colleges, Kendriya Vidyalayas, tuition centres, religious study centres, and special classes.
However, officials clarified that examinations scheduled for Sunday will proceed as planned.
The IMD anticipates that monsoon activity will intensify across India in the coming days due to a low-pressure area expected to develop over the Bay of Bengal by July 24.
Consequently, Kerala is anticipated to receive extremely heavy rainfall over the next five days, particularly in isolated areas until July 21.
Alongside the heavy rain, strong winds with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h are predicted in isolated regions of the state until July 22, as indicated by the weather department.
According to IMD classifications, an orange alert suggests the potential for very heavy rainfall between 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours, while a yellow alert indicates the likelihood of heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm during the same time frame.
Authorities urge residents in the warned districts to remain alert and refrain from entering water bodies or flood-prone areas.
Fishermen are also cautioned against venturing into the sea due to possible rough conditions.
As monsoon activity is expected to strengthen, disaster management teams and local administrations are on standby to address any emergencies.
The state government has encouraged the public to stay informed through weather updates and adhere to official advisories for their safety.
