New Delhi, Oct 16 (NationPress) India and Brazil have decided to significantly enhance the existing agreement between India and the member nations of MERCOSUR, targeting an increase in the share of bilateral trade that will benefit from tariff preferences, as indicated in a joint statement released on Thursday.
This statement was made following a meeting in New Delhi between Brazilian Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, and India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal.
The original agreement between India and MERCOSUR, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay, was established on June 17, 2003, with the goal of strengthening diplomatic ties and promoting trade expansion.
According to the joint statement, this expansion will encompass both tariff and non-tariff issues tied to trade and economic collaboration.
The next phase in this initiative will involve the formation of a technical dialogue between the involved parties, which includes scheduling a meeting for the Joint Administration Committee as stipulated in Article 23 of the preference trade agreement, as soon as mutually convenient. The aim is to clarify the parameters of this expansion.
The involved parties are expected to finalize negotiations within one year from the commencement of discussions, the statement added.
Additionally, the Brazilian representatives indicated their commitment to work closely with their MERCOSUR partners to ensure a substantial, swift, and mutually advantageous deepening of the agreement.
“We reviewed the full range of bilateral trade relations while reiterating our joint commitment to enhance cooperation and investment across various sectors such as energy, healthcare, agriculture, and technology,” stated Goyal post-meeting.
“Our shared democratic values and unified vision for inclusive and sustainable growth form the foundation of our partnership,” the minister emphasized.
This meeting follows recent high-level dialogues between leaders from India and Brazil aimed at boosting trade and investment between the two nations.
Alckmin arrived in India on Wednesday for a two-day visit, accompanied by Cabinet Ministers, senior officials, and a business delegation.
Upon his arrival, he met with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Brazilian Defence Minister Jose Mucio Monteiro Filho was also present during this interaction.
India and Brazil share a strategic partnership, with leaders reviewing the comprehensive array of relations in the defence sector.
They also discussed mutual interests concerning military-to-military cooperation and defence industrial collaboration, including joint training exercises.
“The leaders assessed the progress of ongoing defence initiatives and identified key areas for joint efforts, including opportunities for co-development and co-production of defence equipment,” stated the Ministry of Defence.
