New Delhi, Dec 2 (NationPress) The 14th iteration of the Joint Military Exercise EKUVERIN, involving the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), has officially started in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on Tuesday. This exercise is designed to enhance capabilities in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations across diverse terrains, including jungle, semi-urban, and coastal areas.

The training will take place from December 2-15.

As per the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Army's contingent comprises 45 soldiers, specifically from a battalion of the GARHWAL RIFLES, who will work alongside an equal number of personnel from the Maldivian forces, represented by the MNDF.

The term EKUVERIN translates to 'Friends' in Dhivehi, emphasizing the strong ties of friendship, mutual trust, and military collaboration shared between the two nations, as highlighted in a press release from the MoD.

This exercise, held alternately between the two nations since 2009, exemplifies India's Neighbourhood First Policy and its dedication to fostering lasting defence partnerships with allied nations.

The two-week event aims to bolster interoperability and operational cohesion in Counter-Insurgency and Counter-Terrorism operations across diverse landscapes, as stated by the MoD.

It will involve troops from both nations exchanging best practices, tactical training, and joint operational strategies to enhance their capacities in addressing shared security challenges in the region.

This exercise is a testament to the deepening defence collaboration and mutual commitment of India and the Maldives in promoting regional peace and stability within the Indian Ocean Region.

During a recent two-day official visit to the Maldives in July, PM Modi showcased a substantial improvement in bilateral relations, following a tense period marked by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu's 'India Out' campaign.

During his visit, PM Modi reaffirmed India's commitment to its Neighbourhood First policy. He was the esteemed Guest of Honour at the 60th Independence Day festivities, reinforcing India's role as a dependable ally and First Responder in the Indian Ocean.

Both leaders reiterated their mutual aspirations for peace, stability, and prosperity, paving the way for a comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership.

Additionally, PM Modi announced a Line of Credit amounting to INR 4,850 crore for infrastructure initiatives in the Maldives, notably extended for the first time in Indian Rupee.

This financial aid is poised to strengthen vital sectors in the Maldives, such as education, healthcare, and housing, while also enhancing security capabilities.

Moreover, an amendatory agreement was signed to reduce annual debt repayment from USD 51 million to USD 29 million, alleviating the Maldives' debt burden by 40%.
