Is Indore Facing a Water Crisis? Residents of Bakery Gali Report Contaminated Supply
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 4 (NationPress) Residents of Bakery Gali near Malwa Mill in Indore, Madhya Pradesh are facing a significant drinking water crisis, claiming that the water supplied through municipal taps is black, foul-smelling, and teeming with insects, which poses serious health threats, especially to children.
According to the locals, the water remains unsafe for consumption even after filtering and boiling. Many households have reported frequent illnesses, such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach infections, which they believe are linked to the contaminated supply.
One resident recounted, “The water is extremely dirty. Initially, when the tap runs, the water is unfit for use, but after some time, it improves slightly. Another issue is that the tap stops running quickly, and the flow is inconsistent. Despite the water line being active, dirty water continues to flow. We even see red worms in the water, and no action has been taken…”
Another resident expressed concern about the impact on daily life and the health of children, stating, “Children are frequently falling ill, and washing dishes has become a major issue. This water is essential for life, yet it is unsafe. The conditions in our homes are dire -- there are no adequate arrangements. Only standard tap water, sourced from the Narmada, is available. The primary concern is the contamination of the water. If it is dirty, how can we consume it? There is no filtration or purification system in place…”
In response to the wider water contamination crisis, Indore’s Additional Commissioners, Ashish Pathak and Akash Singh, recently conducted a door-to-door survey in Bhagirathpura, where several fatalities were reported. The inspection aimed to monitor public health conditions, ensure the delivery of safe drinking water via tankers, and verify proper water usage.
Officials indicated that this initiative was intended to restore safety and public confidence, even as Bakery Gali residents persistently demand immediate and long-term solutions to their water issues.
Residents noted that the problem is most severe during the early morning hours. “Early in the morning, the water is consistently dirty. After a while, it clears up somewhat, but it remains unsafe... Occasionally during the rainy season, it stays dirty throughout. Consuming this water leads to sickness. If the water is contaminated, children can experience vomiting and diarrhoea, and everyone suffers health issues,” another resident remarked.
Some accounts are even more distressing. “Numerous worms, including small red ones, are present in the water. It is filthy, and small pieces of dead animals are also found in it. This is what comes from our taps. We attempt to filter the water through multiple layers, yet the problems persist. It creates significant challenges -- sometimes no water comes at all, and other times it is completely black,” a resident shared.
