New Delhi, March 13 (NationPress) Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the critical role of innovation in fortifying the democratic and electoral landscape during a recent address, according to an official report.
Speaking to officer trainees from the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and the Royal Bhutan Service (RBS) at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIDEM), Kumar urged officials to harness the potential of innovation to enhance public services.

Upon assuming office in February 2025, he introduced 30 strategic measures under his leadership, concentrating on stakeholder engagement, electoral reforms, technological advancements, ensuring voter roll integrity, enhancing voting accessibility, and boosting capacity building.
In December 2025, Kumar officially accepted the Chairmanship of the Council of Member States of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) for the year 2026.
During the event, he highlighted India's rich democratic tradition and the Election Commission of India’s extensive experience in facilitating transparent and credible elections.
In his acceptance speech to representatives of member nations, observer countries, and officials from International IDEA, Kumar spoke first in Hindi followed by English.
He characterized the Election Commission of India as a constitutional entity responsible for conducting elections for the offices of the President, Vice President, Parliament, and state legislatures.
Kumar noted that India, with more than 900 million voters across 28 states and 8 Union Territories, boasts a robust electoral system that has evolved over nearly 75 years.
He also pointed out the vast scale of India’s election management, asserting that during Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission is “the largest organization on the planet,” deploying over one million personnel nationwide.
Kumar expressed pride in India's election to the Chair of the Council of Member States of International IDEA, an intergovernmental organization comprised of 35 democratic nations and two observer countries.
