Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 13 (NationPress) In Kerala, the Janata Dal (Secular) acts as a conduit between the CPI(M) and the BJP, according to seasoned Congress leader Cherian Phillip.
Phillip highlighted that nationally, the JD(S), led by H.D. Deve Gowda, is a coalition partner of the BJP.
“Nevertheless, in Kerala, the party maintains its position within the LDF (Left Democratic Front), primarily due to political convenience and mutual benefits,” Phillip stated.
Now aged 70, Phillip was closely associated with veteran CWC member A.K. Antony in Kerala until 2001. After a fallout with Antony that year, he aligned with the CPI(M) and remained a steadfast supporter until 2021 when he rejoined the Congress, now serving as an informal spokesperson for the party.
In the approaching December local body elections, JD(S) candidates are standing as LDF nominees across various districts and levels. In contrast, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) -- another member of the INDIA bloc -- has been granted only a minimal number of seats, highlighting what Phillip referred to as the Left’s “selective approach” to coalition politics.
“Intriguingly, while H.D. Kumaraswamy, a JD(S) leader, is a Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet, K. Krishnankutty, also from the JD(S), remains a Minister in Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s cabinet in Kerala,” Phillip pointed out.
Within the LDF, every ally has received ministerial representation, except for the RJD, whose leader, K.P. Mohanan, has been excluded. Additionally, when a Rajya Sabha seat became available, it was awarded to Jose K. Mani from the Kerala Congress, bypassing M.V. Shreyams Kumar, the state president of the RJD.
“This complete marginalization of the RJD, an INDIA bloc constituent, while keeping the BJP ally JD(S) within the ruling coalition, indicates a strategic inclination towards the BJP. It represents a political balancing act by the Left, which appears hesitant to sever connections with a party maintaining close ties with the ruling government at the Centre,” Phillip remarked.
