Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Sunday, 19 July launched a sharp attack on the Indian National Congress and Karnataka MLA H.C. Balakrishna — a close associate of Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar — over alleged remarks made against Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje at a press conference linked to protests over the Bidadi Township Project near Bengaluru. Joshi demanded an immediate and unconditional apology from the legislator to the women of the state.

The Remark That Sparked the Row

The controversy centres on comments allegedly made by H.C. Balakrishna while defending the proposed Bidadi Township Project, which has faced stiff opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular) over concerns related to land acquisition and environmental impact. During a press interaction, Balakrishna reportedly referred to the project as having been initiated by Karandlaje's 'Yajman' — a term meaning husband in Kannada.

Shobha Karandlaje is unmarried. The remark was widely interpreted as an indirect reference to former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, who is widely regarded as her political mentor. The inference drew immediate condemnation from BJP leaders across the state.

What Joshi Said

Addressing the controversy, Joshi questioned whether insulting women had become an institutionalised practice within the Congress. 'Congress leaders have absolutely no respect for women. Is character assassination of women the culture of the Congress party?' he said in a statement.

He described Balakrishna's alleged language as the 'height of indecency' and argued that the episode reflected the Congress party's broader attitude towards women in public life. Joshi further stated that taking political differences to the level of personal insults represented a deterioration of political discourse in Karnataka.

'It is unfortunate that Congress leaders have stooped to such a level while speaking about a respected woman public representative. This amounts to the exploitation and humiliation of women,' he said, adding that the party had a pattern of targeting women's dignity.

Apology Demanded, Congress Challenged

Joshi demanded that Balakrishna 'tender an unconditional apology to the entire women's community for making insensitive and patriarchal comments against a woman public representative.'

He also challenged the Congress leadership to initiate disciplinary action against the MLA, questioning whether the party's proximity to Balakrishna would shield him from accountability. 'Congress leaders frequently speak about women's empowerment. Do they have the courage to act against their own MLA for his anti-women conduct?' Joshi asked.

Rahul Gandhi Drawn Into the Controversy

In a pointed escalation, Joshi also directed his criticism at Congress Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, asking: 'Is this the culture of the Congress party? Is this the tradition your party follows while speaking about women?' The question was framed as a challenge to the Congress high command to publicly respond to the MLA's conduct.

The Bidadi Township Project has already been a flashpoint in Karnataka politics, with the BJP and JD(S) mounting sustained opposition over land acquisition concerns and potential environmental consequences.
