Kolkata, July 3 (NationPress) The family of the law college student, who tragically became a victim of gang-rape at her college in Kasba, South Kolkata last week, has approached the Calcutta High Court, requesting to be included as a party in the public interest litigation (PIL) that seeks a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the incident.
The initial hearing on this PIL is scheduled for later today at a division bench of the court.
The petitioners, mainly advocates practicing in the Calcutta High Court, did not include the victim’s family in their petition. They contended that since their case does not argue against the law college student, who is the victim, there was no need to involve her or her family.
The victim’s family believes they have the right to participate in the PIL, as the victim is a member of their family, and they wish to voice their arguments in the case.
Currently, the victim’s family is inclined to trust the ongoing investigation by the Kolkata Police for the time being, rather than immediately calling for a CBI inquiry.
As of Wednesday, the investigation was transferred to the Detective Department of Kolkata Police.
The local Kasba Police initiated the investigation and arrested the three main suspects within 24 hours of the victim filing her complaint on June 25.
A special investigating team (SIT), led by an officer at the level of Assistant Commissioner of Police, was also formed to look into the case. However, the city police's higher authorities decided to shift the investigation to the Detective Department on Wednesday.
The PIL requesting a CBI investigation was filed on June 30 before the division bench of Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Smita Das.
The petitioners are also seeking a fast-track hearing. On June 30, the division bench instructed the petitioners to issue notices to all relevant parties. Subsequently, notices were sent out by the petitioners, excluding the family members of the victim.
