Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S. Keerthana on Sunday, 25 May 2025, broke her silence over the controversy surrounding her demeanour while responding to media questions about the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Coimbatore's Sulur area, asserting that her body language had been taken out of context and weaponised for political ends. The minister's clarification came through a post on her X handle, after visuals of her smiling during a media interaction in Virudhunagar went viral and drew sharp criticism from opposition parties and social media users.

How the Controversy Erupted

The backlash began after footage circulated online showing Keerthana smiling while interacting with reporters at what she described as an industry-related briefing in Virudhunagar. Critics alleged the expression reflected insensitivity toward the brutal killing of the young girl — a case that has triggered widespread outrage across Tamil Nadu. Opposition leaders amplified the footage on social media, framing it as evidence of governmental callousness.

Keerthana, however, clarified that the smile was a natural expression at the close of a question-and-answer session and was not directed at any question related to the tragic incident. She maintained that her expression had been deliberately distorted for political purposes.

What the Government Has Done

The minister stressed that the Sulur child rape-murder case was deeply painful and that the state government had responded swiftly. According to Keerthana, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had immediately directed officials to act after the incident came to light.

Authorities subsequently formed five special investigation teams and reviewed more than 250 CCTV recordings as part of the probe. Within 24 hours, police arrested the two accused — identified as Karthik and Mohanraj — and the minister assured that stringent action would be pursued against them under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Keerthana's Stand on Political Criticism

While acknowledging that opposition scrutiny of the ruling government is a legitimate democratic exercise, Keerthana drew a distinction between political accountability and what she called the distortion of personal moments. 'The Tamil Nadu government will not compromise on public safety and justice under any circumstances,' she asserted in her post.

She further argued that converting an individual's private expressions into political weapons was 'not a healthy approach for society,' and called on critics to focus on the government's substantive response to the crime rather than on optics.

Broader Context

The Sulur case has intensified scrutiny of child safety and law-enforcement responsiveness in Tamil Nadu. The state has faced recurring criticism over crimes against minors, and opposition parties have used the incident to question the Vijay-led government's record on women and child safety. Keerthana's clarification is unlikely to fully defuse the political storm, but the government's emphasis on rapid arrests and POCSO proceedings signals an effort to shift focus back to judicial outcomes.
