Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 4 (NationPress) The Kerala government’s initiative to organize a Global Ayyappa Sangamam in celebration of the Travancore Devaswom Board’s platinum jubilee has ignited a fervent discussion, eliciting strong responses from various political parties, religious factions, and the Pandalam Palace.

The event is set to occur at Pamba on September 20.

Former BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan, upon his visit to the Pandalam Palace, called into question the state’s ethical right to carry out the event.

“No one is being barred from attending the Sangamam. That choice rests with the devotees. However, the core concern is the purity of intent. What legitimacy does a so-called secular government possess to organize an Ayyappa Sangamam?” he queried.

Rajasekharan also mentioned plans for a counter event, the “Vishwasa Sangamam,” a gathering of devotees arranged by the Sabarimala Karma Samiti on September 22, with participation anticipated from Union Ministers and various socio-cultural groups, including the NSS.

The opposition has equally criticized the government, accusing it of exploiting the situation for political gains.

The Congress party has condemned the event as a tactic for political advantage. Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan dismissed the Sangamam as an election gimmick, highlighting that the government has done “nothing for Sabarimala’s enhancement in a decade” and has even withheld the Travancore Devaswom Board's annual grant of ₹82 lakh for three years.

“Now, just before elections, they suddenly rediscover Ayyappa devotion. Devotees can see through this hypocrisy,” Satheesan remarked.

Echoing this sentiment, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala accused the government of double standards, recalling how Chief Minister Vijayan amended an affidavit to the Supreme Court that allowed young women into Sabarimala.

“This action hurt the feelings of countless devotees. The Chief Minister should apologize and retract the affidavit, rather than performing election theatrics in the name of devotion,” Chennithala urged.

Conversely, State Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan dismissed the accusations, asserting that the summit is devoid of political agendas. “This is a devotional gathering celebrating the Devaswom Board’s platinum jubilee. Opposition leaders lack unity in their opposition. They are welcome to hold a parallel summit; we have no objections,” Vasavan stated.

On the other hand, the Pandalam Palace, viewed as the ancestral home of Lord Ayyappa, has adopted a cautious position. Palace representative N. Shankar Varma mentioned that a decision regarding attendance would be made after discussions.

“Our responsibility is to uphold traditions. If the summit genuinely supports devotees, we will align with it; otherwise, we will not participate,” Varma stated.

As discussions heat up, the Sangamam has become a focal point where faith, politics, and tradition converge, with both the government and opposition vying to claim the Ayyappa devotion narrative.

Point of View

It is vital to approach this unfolding situation with an unbiased lens. The Global Ayyappa Sangamam represents a complex intersection of faith and politics in Kerala. While the government promotes the event as a celebration of devotion, the backlash from opposition parties raises essential questions about the sincerity of such initiatives, especially with elections on the horizon.
