  • This trend has been consistent since 2014.
  • Voting patterns reveal political alignment in Kerala.
  • Historical outcomes show NDA candidates prevailing in national elections.

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 8 (NationPress) In the upcoming Vice-Presidential election on Tuesday, only three MPs from Kerala are anticipated to support the BJP-led NDA candidate, maintaining a voting trend established since 2014.

Kerala contributes 20 MPs to the Lok Sabha and nine to the Rajya Sabha, along with two nominated members, totaling 31 representatives.

Among these, 28 MPs are affiliated with either the Congress-led UDF or the CPI(M)-led Left alliance, both part of the INDIA bloc, while merely three are associated with the BJP.

The candidates include C.P. Radhakrishnan, a veteran BJP leader and the current Governor of Maharashtra endorsed by the NDA, and B. Sudarshan Reddy, a retired Supreme Court judge from Telangana, supported by the INDIA bloc.

Out of Kerala’s 20 Lok Sabha MPs, 19 are likely to support Justice Reddy.

This includes 18 MPs from the UDF and the sole CPI(M) member, K. Radhakrishnan.

The only exception is Suresh Gopi, an actor-turned-politician and Minister of State for Tourism, who intends to vote for Radhakrishnan.

Gopi achieved a remarkable victory from the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat.

All nine general seats in the Rajya Sabha from Kerala are occupied by the UDF and the Left, ensuring their backing for Reddy.

However, the two nominated members—Olympian P.T. Usha and senior BJP leader C. Sadanandan—will cast their votes for the NDA nominee.

Consequently, while 28 MPs from Kerala will vote for the INDIA bloc candidate, just three—Suresh Gopi, Usha, and Sadanandan—will support Radhakrishnan.

This voting pattern signifies a persistent trend since the BJP-led NDA assumed power in 2014.

During every Presidential and Vice-Presidential election, MPs from Kerala's two predominant political factions have tended to support the losing candidate, while the NDA's nominees, backed by their national majority, have triumphed.

With the odds heavily favoring the NDA, this pattern is poised to repeat itself when the results are announced on Tuesday evening.

Point of View

It is evident that Kerala’s political dynamics showcase a consistent alignment with the INDIA bloc, reflecting a broader national trend. The robust support for Justice Reddy over the NDA candidate underscores the need for the BJP to reassess its strategies in a region that has historically favored opposition parties.
