Thiruvananthapuram, June 20 (NationPress) Kerala State Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian expressed his commitment on Friday to establish a sailing school and foster academic partnerships, aiming to elevate the overall welfare of the fisheries sector in the state. Speaking to IANS after visiting France, where he explored various ports and fishing harbors, Cherian highlighted that his five-day trip was part of the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) held in Nice.

“Post my conference session, I participated in a follow-up meeting previously held in Delhi with key fisheries officials from the European Union. During my visit, I toured several ports and harbors across France,” Cherian noted.

“The insights gained from my visits to these fisheries-related locations were exhilarating. We have already conducted two meetings with high-ranking EU officials. Kerala is brimming with potential, and we are organizing a fisheries conclave in Kochi later this year, where EU officials and investors will be present,” Cherian added.

He mentioned that as part of the forthcoming conclave, his plans include seeking support for establishing a sailing school and academic collaboration with the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS).

“During my visit to the French ports, I witnessed a significant influx of tourists interested in sailing, presenting a tremendous opportunity for Kerala, given our abundant lakes, rivers, and extensive coastline,” Cherian stated.

“Additionally, we are planning to host a boat show at the conclave. My trip allowed me to see various incredible boat designs. Kerala, a sought-after tourist destination, can capitalize on sailing as a unique tourism product, generating new job opportunities,” Cherian remarked.

Currently, he is awaiting feedback from EU officials regarding the preparations for the Kochi conclave, having completed groundwork and two preliminary meetings.
