Close to 50 lakh students across Kerala returned to classrooms on Monday, 1 June, as schools reopened after the annual two-month summer vacation. The day marked the formal start of a new academic year and one of the first major public engagements for the newly formed government led by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan.

State-Level Inauguration

Chief Minister Satheesan inaugurated the state-level school reopening function — known as Praveshanolsavam — at the Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School in Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram. New State Education Minister N. Shamsudin arrived ahead of the Chief Minister and was seen distributing sweets among young students before taking his seat alongside them.

A Deliberately Low-Key Celebration

Unlike the festival-like atmosphere that characterised school reopening days under the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government headed by Pinarayi Vijayan, this year's Praveshanolsavam was kept deliberately modest. The new administration chose to focus on academic preparedness and student welfare rather than elaborate public celebrations. Despite the subdued official tone, the day lost none of its emotional resonance for families across the state.

Social Media Turns the Day into a Statewide Family Album

Social media platforms were flooded with photographs and videos of children in freshly ironed uniforms, carrying new school bags and water bottles. Parents shared first-day-of-school pictures, while grandparents posted nostalgic messages alongside photographs of grandchildren heading to class. The phenomenon, which has grown rapidly with the spread of smartphones in recent years, has transformed Kerala's school reopening day into a virtual statewide family album — blending nostalgia with celebration.

Notably, over three lakh children are entering schools for the very first time this year, adding to the sense of occasion. Education authorities confirmed that all preparations, including the distribution of textbooks and learning materials, had been completed well in advance.

The reopening also comes amid active discussion over the new government's education reform proposals, including a provision for menstrual leave for girl students and a broader push to make schools more inclusive. These measures have drawn both support and debate in the weeks leading up to the academic year.

Hovering over the celebrations was the imminent arrival of the southwest monsoon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued heavy rainfall alerts for several districts, prompting many parents to begin the academic year with one eye on the classroom and the other on darkening skies.
