Kolkata, June 29 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, emphasized the necessity for a parallel mass movement alongside the protests organized by individual opposition parties. This comes in light of the recent incident where a law student was raped on June 25 within her college premises at Kasba, located in South Kolkata.
Adhikari called for the movement to mirror the protests that erupted following the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital last August. That protest saw participation from ordinary citizens, accomplished individuals from various fields, celebrities, and members of civil society.
“This is not the time to remain passive at home. There have been numerous instances of brutal assaults on women during the current Trinamool Congress regime. It is critical that we initiate a widespread movement involving people from every segment of society,” Adhikari stated while attending a rally named ‘Kanya Suraksha Yatra’ (Girl Safety March) in South Kolkata on Sunday.
“The Kanya Suraksha Yatra will extend across the state in the upcoming days. The BJP plans to hold a significant protest throughout the Kasba area on July 2,” added the BJP leader.
During the event, Adhikari accused Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma of ensuring that the rape victim and her family were isolated, preventing communication with others regarding the incident.
“I demand to know from the city police commissioner about the undisclosed location where the victim and her family have been taken. They should be permitted to communicate freely,” the LoP stated.
He also called for a “march to the state secretariat” on August 9, marking the one-year anniversary of the R.G. Kar rape and murder tragedy. “I will reach out to the parents of the R.G. Kar victim and ask them to support the ‘march to secretariat’ initiative,” Adhikari concluded.
