Kolkata, Sep 11 (NationPress) - The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Kolkata Police has successfully rescued 10 individuals, including nine minor girls, and apprehended six suspects involved in operating a sex trafficking ring, as confirmed by the authorities on Thursday.
Upon receiving a tip-off, law enforcement officials conducted a raid on a residence in the Burtolla police station area of North Kolkata on Wednesday, leading to the rescue of the 10 individuals, primarily minors.
The residence, managed by a middle-aged couple, was the focal point of the operation. The police arrested the couple, identified as Amit Banerjee and his wife Saraswati Banerjee, at the scene.
Additionally, four more individuals were detained on suspicion of their involvement in trafficking activities. Among these suspects is a young woman. The individuals arrested include Suman Halder, Deep Chatterjee, Akash Chowdhury, and Pooja Mistry.
Of the four suspects, Suman resides in South 24 Parganas, while the others hail from North 24 Parganas. The ages of the suspects range from 22 to 34 years.
The police are currently investigating the circumstances under which the minors were brought to the location, determining whether they were intended for trafficking or to operate a sex ring.
A senior police official stated, "Based on credible intelligence, we executed a raid at 4/A, Gulu Ostagar Lane. During the operation, we discovered nine minor girls and one adult woman at the premises. Two individuals managing the brothel and four traffickers were apprehended. An investigation is underway."
Interrogations of the detained individuals are ongoing as investigators strive to gather more details about the case and uncover any additional participants in this trafficking network.
It's important to highlight that there have been recurring complaints regarding the operation of sex rackets in various spas and massage parlors throughout Kolkata and nearby regions. In response, the police have been conducting numerous raids to combat these activities. The recent raid in the Burtolla area was initiated following a reliable tip-off.
