Kolkata, June 20 (NationPress) The Kolkata Police dispatched a formal request to the Regional Passport Office (RPO) in West Bengal on Friday, urging immediate action to revoke passports issued based on fraudulent documents, particularly fake birth certificates.
A source within the city police disclosed that officials investigating counterfeit passport operations in the state have uncovered a significant fraud scheme in Pathankhali, located in the Gosaba block of South 24 Parganas district. This scheme was involved in the production of fake birth certificates, which serve as the initial document in the lengthy process of obtaining counterfeit Indian passports.
Investigators have confirmed that many of the counterfeit birth certificates generated by the Pathankhali syndicate were subsequently utilized to create fake Indian passports.
Moreover, it has come to light that individuals using these fraudulent passports have left India and are currently residing abroad.
Given the serious nature of these findings, the city police insider indicated that the RPO has been urged to promptly revoke the passports issued on the basis of these fraudulent documents.
In addition, a separate notification has been sent to the headquarters of the state Health department, requesting the immediate cancellation of the fake birth certificates identified by the investigation.
A senior official from the state Health department confirmed the receipt of this request and stated that the process to cancel these fraudulent birth certificates is already underway.
The investigation into the multi-crore counterfeit passport operations revealed that fake birth certificates are a fundamental component in securing other Indian identity documents.
Authorities noted a recurring pattern among these operations, wherein illegal immigrants, primarily from Bangladesh, are initially sheltered in various villages near the borders, both land and coastal. Subsequently, agents facilitate the acquisition of fake birth certificates and ration cards, which are the initial steps toward obtaining other identity documents.
