Kolkata, Oct 2 (NationPress) - The city experienced intense rainfall on Thursday afternoon, with more precipitation expected later in the day. This downpour may disrupt the Durga Puja committees as they prepare for the idol immersion in the Hooghly River on Vijayadashmi, marking the final day of the Durga Puja festival.
Cloudy skies have enveloped the city and surrounding areas since the early hours. By noon, the atmosphere darkened, transitioning from light rain to a torrential downpour across the city.
The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms in Kolkata and nearby districts in the upcoming hours.
Wind gusts are predicted to reach speeds of 30-40 km/h, as stated by the department.
Additionally, heavy rainfall is anticipated in parts of Howrah, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas in the next few hours, prompting an orange alert for thunderstorms in these areas.
This rainfall is attributed to a deep depression forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is gradually moving inland. As a result, rain is expected to persist in southern Bengal and Kolkata until Saturday.
According to the Meteorological Department, the depression has shifted north-westward at a speed of 17 km/h and has intensified into a deep depression.
Currently, this deep depression is located in the west-central and adjacent northwestern Bay of Bengal, approximately 190 km south-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha, 230 km south of Puri, 190 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 250 km east of Visakhapatnam, and 310 km south-southwest of Paradip.
By Thursday evening, it is expected to take shape as a deep depression and make landfall between Gopalpur and Paradip along the Odisha-Andhra coast.
Moreover, heavy rain is also predicted for northern Bengal until Sunday, with significant rainfall expected in the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar on Thursday and Friday. An orange alert for very heavy rain has been issued for these districts on Saturday.
Heavy rainfall is also forecasted for North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda districts on those days.
