Washington, Feb 11 (NationPress) A group of six US legislators has sent a pointed letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, calling for an investigation into the former Department of Justice's (DoJ) indictment of Adani Group officials.
The legislators—Lance Gooden, Pat Fallon, Mike Haridopolos, Brandon Gill, William R Timmons, and Brian Babin—asserted that the DoJ's actions were a “misguided crusade” that jeopardized America's rapport with a “strategic geopolitical partner” like India.
In their letter, they stated, “This case is based on claims that members of this company, located in India, sought to bribe Indian officials, who are also based in India. Rather than refer the matter to the relevant Indian authorities, the Biden DoJ chose to advance and indict the company's leaders without any tangible injury to US interests.”
The lawmakers emphasized that there was “no compelling reason” to pursue the case in a way that could strain relations with an ally such as India, unless there were other motivations involved.
They further remarked, “This misguided crusade risked damaging our relationship with a crucial geopolitical partner like India, especially with the upcoming return of President Trump to the Oval Office.”
Last November, the Adani Group dismissed the DoJ's actions as unfounded, asserting that the indictment under the Joe Biden administration was unjustified.
The legislators highlighted that given Donald Trump's objective to rejuvenate US economic growth, maintaining strong economic ties with “valuable partners” in India is crucial for realizing that aim.
“Unnecessary actions against those who have invested billions and created thousands of jobs can dissuade investors from supporting our economy. Taking these factors into account, the decision to pursue this indictment inflicts more harm than good on US interests,” they underscored.
The US and India enjoy a relationship rooted in mutual respect—an ethos echoed by President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“We urge you to investigate the conduct of the Biden DoJ and would appreciate access to all records regarding this case, to facilitate a coordinated effort in uncovering the truth,” they concluded.
Recently, Forbes published an article describing the DoJ's indictment of Adani Group officials as a “strategic blunder with serious geopolitical repercussions.”
In the article titled 'The US Harms The West's Alliances With A Far-Flung Indictment In India', author Melik Kaylan argued that the indictment, which makes allegations of bribery and financial misrepresentation, “risks damaging India-US relations at a moment when Washington is striving for stronger alliances to counteract China's growing influence.”
