Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary M.A. Baby on Tuesday declared that the BJP-led NDA government is in its 'last days,' citing the NEET examination controversy, the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and the BJP's defeat in the Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar. Baby made the remarks upon arriving in Agartala, Tripura, where he is scheduled to attend key party meetings.

Baby pointed to two developments as evidence of what he called the NDA government's declining grip on power. The first was the nationwide student agitation over alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), which he claimed forced Dharmendra Pradhan to step down as Union Education Minister. The second was the BJP's loss of the Bankipur constituency in Bihar — a seat the party had held for three decades and one that had been vacated by BJP's National President Nitin Nabin.

'The RSS-controlled BJP-led government at the Centre is losing the support of the masses,' Baby claimed. He further said, 'Movements by workers, farmers, students and youths across the country, along with the BJP's recent electoral setbacks, prove that the last days of the Modi government are approaching. The role of the Left parties in providing political resistance will increase further.'

Baby also acknowledged the role of student organisations in recent protests. 'The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) played a significant role in the recent student movement in Delhi and various parts of the country. But the SFI, AISF, AISA and such other organisations also played an important role,' he told reporters.

Significance of Baby's Tripura Visit

This is Baby's second visit to Tripura in two months, and it carries electoral weight. He participated in a meeting with members of the CPI-M state secretariat and is set to attend the party's state committee meeting. The timing is significant: Tripura is preparing for elections to Village Committees — equivalent to Gram Panchayats — in areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), as well as urban local body elections across the state.

Baby framed the CPI-M's growing assertiveness as part of a broader national resurgence of Left politics. He argued that the confluence of student unrest, agrarian discontent, labour movements, and the BJP's recent electoral reverses has created an opening for Left parties to consolidate as a 'powerful political force in India.' Whether the Left can translate that narrative into electoral outcomes — particularly in states like Tripura where it once governed — remains to be seen.
